Most people reading this article will probably have heard of the term `jihad`, meaning (to those who wage it), `holy war`, and recognize it as having its` origins in one of the world`s largest religions which is trying its` hardest to impose its` particular faith (and all of the dogma that goes with it), by means of armed aggression, upon all of the other world`s religions (and all of the dogma that goes with them). But if we can now begin to think beyond this general understanding of the term `holy war` and instead look, each and every one of us, inwards to ourselves, we should be able to find that we each have our own personal `holy war` to engage in and fight, especially if we are practicing Christians.
We should make no mistake about this fact, we truly are at war, and it is not only the obvious outwards facing war of the evils and the hatreds enacted against us by this physical world that we battle against but also, and more importantly for our spiritual salvation, the inwards facing war that persistently rages between our evil, fleshly desires, and the Lord God`s holy spirit. We should realise that if we can win this war or at the very least keep under control and subjection our human `nature`, then we will be all the more stengthened and capable of taking on the evil challenges of the physical world that we know of only too well.
How many times I wonder, have each and every one of us found ourselves making an excuse to do something that deep down inside we know will gradually lead us to commit a sin which all along we wanted to commit in the first place, but we devise such a round about way to the coming of the committing of that sin, that when the time arrives and we are finally sinning as we wanted to do all along, it really doesn`t seem that bad. By doing this, what we have done is to identify our original idea to sin, we have recognized it as being wrong and rejected it, but then we have allowed our `enemy within` to devise for us another more circuitous route to eventually commit it. Then we convince ourselves that it is only a `little` sin anyway, and that it won`t do us any harm and it certainly isn`t doing anybody else any harm. (well, at least not in the short term) Let`s look at all `little`, unrepented of sins this way, imagine each one as a small building block, not much to look at on its` own but then as we journey through our lives we begin to produce more and more of them and with each one that is produced, before we know it the next one comes along and they get made quicker and quicker and easier and easier. Before long we find (if we still have the mind to look!) that we have enough blocks to build a wall and if we keep on building we will eventually have enough walls to create for ourselves a `house`, and we will not see this `house` as others will see it because we will be on the inside looking out. Sin, any sin, is a seed, but it is the seed of a weed and it may start off its` life as just a tiny, insignificant, little thing growing in a secluded corner of a well kept garden but ignore it, or worse still feed it, and it and it will grow and grow and reproduce and take over, and what was once a well kept garden will eventually only be suitable for grubbing out and its` produce for burning. We can read of something similar if we look at Matthew 12: 43-45. `When the evil spirit (or the desire to sin) leaves a man, it walks through dry (infertile) places seeking rest but finding none. Then it decides to return to the house (the person) from which it came, and when it has returned it finds the house empty, swept and in good order. Then it goes forth and brings back seven more spirits which are more wicked than itself, and they enter in and also dwell there: so that the final condition of that man is worse than it was to begin with. . .` We can upon looking, find within ourselves the `dark side`, the part of our human make-up that demands that we sin so that the desires of our fleshly carnal mind can be satisfied. But also, thankfully, there is within us an opposite to this `dark side`, there is a God-given side of us that is bathed in His light, and that light becomes stronger and more capable of penetrating and thus obliterating the reached parts of our `dark side`, if we constantly strive to overcome sin and keep His, the Lord God`s commandments. And it has to be a constant striving for us, for although we may win our battle against a particular sin, that sin will never lie down until it is totally defeated and never again comes to mind, and besides, there will be many more desires to sin for us to overcome in our war with the `enemy within`. The `light side` of our human make-up also has an `ace up its` sleeve` for our benefit, and it is known as `guilt`, which will lead a basically good hearted person to repent of their sin. Yes, because of guilt most of us will begin to feel remorse and bitter disappointment because we have once again allowed sin to get the better of us, but we should be aware that the real battle, the hardest battle, is the one that we fight when our `light side` intervenes before we commit sin! It should really go without saying that the longer that a true Christian has lived in and practiced their faith then this particular battle of not trying to sin in the first place is the one that we should be constantly engaged in. The apostle Paul describes what this particular battle of fighting the `enemy within` has been, and is like, for himself. Let`s read for now, just two verses from Romans 6: 17-18. `Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that lives within me. For I know that within me, (that is to say in his fleshly state of being) there lives no good thing: because to want to (do good) is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I cannot find`. Now let`s read Ephesians 6: 12. `We do not fight against (others) flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.` If we cannot master and control or at the very least keep a tight rein on our own `in built` sinful, fleshly desires, then what should we suppose are our chances of overcoming the temptations of Satan and his demons when they really get to work on us? Oh I know the scripture in James 4: 7. that tells us to `resist the devil and he will flee from you`, and he will flee, but it`s our own fleshly desires that we find so hard to resist, and once we submit to any of them then we provide an opening for Satan and/or his demons to enter in and really start to get to work, and once again we find that it is the `enemy within` that will have betrayed us. Satan is called a `serpent` in the scriptures, but this can be better translated as a `whisperer`. Fleshly desire comes to the surface, instead of crushing it immediately and closing the door on it, we let it dominate our thoughts, and by doing so we leave a door wide open for Satan to influence us. Before we know where we are, there`s that silent to the ears but loud to the mind voice, whispering and prompting us to go ahead and do what we wanted to do all along, more often than not accompanied by all of the lying reasons why it is `alright` to do it. Remember what Satan said to Eve in the garden of Eden when Eve told him that the Lord God had informed them that if she or Adam ate of the forbidden fruit, that they would die? Satan told Eve, convincing her in her own mind by telling her what she wanted to hear, that she would not surely die. Eve failed in her battle (presuming that she ever had one) with her particular `enemy within`. Many of the so-called `christian` churches of this world just love to continually proclaim things like `Jesus will save us from ourselves, from our sins`. Well yes, He will, but only if He knows us. Then I hear the cry from such `christians`, `How can you state such a shameful thing, Jesus knows all who call on and profess His name`. Sounds right and Christian enough, but is it true? Does Jesus know and recognize all who call on and profess His name? Let`s find out by having a read of first Matthew 7: 21-23. `Not everyone that says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many shall say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not spoken in Your name? And in Your name have cast out demons? And in Your name done many wonderful works? And then I will profess to them, I never knew you: depart from Me, you that do evil works.` And now let`s read Luke 13: 24-27. `Strive to enter in at the narrow gate: for many I tell you, will seek to enter in and will not be able to. For once the master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you are standing outside and begin to knock on the door saying, Lord, Lord, open to us; and He shall answer and say to you, I do not know you or from where you come. And you shall answer and say, We have eaten and drunk in Your presence, and You have taught in our streets. But He shall say, I tell you, I do not know you or from where you have come, depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.` Sin, it really is our worst enemy, and if we have the Lord`s holy spirit dwelling within us, we will often find ourselves `in two minds` about whether something that we want to do is actually committing sin or not, which means that the holy spirit is doing its` job, even as a two-edged sword. Hebrews 4: 12. `For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing in two of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.` Sin that dwells within us pulls us in one direction, and the Lord God`s holy spirit pulls us in the other, and it can be so difficult for us at times to go in the direction that we know that we should be going in. King David knew only too well about this relentless battle of personal good and evil, because he was constantly fighting the ones which raged within himself. Many times he failed to win a particular battle, in fact he succumbed to many defeats, but in the end he won the war. How? By never giving up trying to win! Let`s have a look at some verses from some of the psalms that were written by king David, and we should be able to appreciate the battles that he had with his `enemy within`. Psalm 32: 3-6. `When I kept silence (did not admit to a sin or sins) my bones grew old because of my groaning all day long. Day and night Your hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. (So) I acknowledged my sin to You, and my guilt I did not hide. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. For this, every one who is godly will pray to You in a time when You may still be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come near to him`. Right at the beginning of this piece of scripture we can understand that David`s `enemy within` had been working against him by keeping him away from admitting his sin(s) to to the Lord God, whilst saying his prayers. Let`s now read Psalm 38: 1-4. `O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, neither chasten me in Your hot displeasure. For your arrows stick fast in me, and Your hand presses me down. There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head: as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me`. Yes, king David`s sins were many, and many of his sins were made possible for him to commit because of his `enemy within` being at times, too strong for him. But perhaps his `enemy within`s` greatest triumph over him was that which let David`s lust for another man`s wife, Bathsheba, overcome him, and he then committed adultery with her. The result of this union made her pregnant and then in order to conceal this fact from her husband Uriah the Hittite, David had Uriah murdered in an underhand and `sneaky` way. As is so often the case when we sin, we allow ourselves to be deluded by thinking that that which we do is not really that bad. David, at the time, probably imagined that the murderous act which he committed against Uriah the Hittite, would not be recognized as such because of the manner in which he had ordered it to be carried out, probably even deluding himself in the process. (read 2 Samuel 11.) But as we know, the Lord God is not deceived by the feeble trickery of men, He knew full well that which was king David`s intention towards Uriah. The whole of Psalm 51 is about David`s repentance because of these treacherous acts which he committed, but we`ll just read Psalm 51: 1-6. `Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your loving kindness: according to the multitude of Your tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight: that You might be justified when You speak, and be blameless when You judge. Behold, I was formed in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts: ( where the `enemy within` likes to dwell!) and in the hidden part You shall make me to know wisdom.` But for king David, unlike perhaps for other people, the Lord was willing to be patient with him because He knew that good thing which lay deep in David`s heart and the work that was still required of him by the Lord, to accomplish. King David was one of the Lord`s anointed, chosen in his youth to be king over Israel, Psalm 89: 20. `I have found David, My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him.` We can read the words of the prophet Samuel when he was speaking about the young David to the soon to be deposed king Saul if we read Samuel 13: 14. `But now your kingdom shall not continue: for the Lord has sought for Himself a man after His Own heart, (one who will do His bidding) and the Lord has commanded him to be captain over His people, because you have not obeyed that which was commanded of you.` As we can understand by the reading of these scriptures, David was indeed very special to the Lord, but this did not prevent him from having his own `enemy within` with which he had to constantly battle against, and it is only because he eventually won, not only the battles but the war with his `enemy within`, that he found favour and forgiveness from the Lord. So, having read what the Lord God forgave king David of, should we suppose that He will still extend the same merciful forgiveness to an adulterer or a murderer today, or more correctly, to a murderer or adulterer who repents of that which they have done? Well the answer is not that straight forward, remember it is the Lord who is in full awareness of the circumstances and the state of the `heart` of the sinner involved, and it is this knowledge about a person that eventually condemns them or enables them to be absolved from their sins. No man can do this, and if the Lord instructs that a murderer should be put to death, well this is not a `punishment`, it is merely an immediate and a sensible precaution in case the murderer commits murder again. If we are honest with ourselves, I think that most of us will have to admit to having committed adultery at some point in our lives, and remember, it does not have to be `hands on` adultery in order to be guilty of committing it. The sin of adultery was magnified up by Jesus himself, from being the actual physicality of the act, to having to be merely thinking of committing the act to be guilty of it when, in the book of Matthew, He stated this; Matthew 5: 27-28. `You have heard that it was said by them of old time , you shall not commit adultery: but I say to you, that whosoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.` You know it only takes a split second for any of us to let our guard down and start committing `spiritual` adultery, and by the time that we realise that which we are doing and then manage to `rein ourselves in`, it is already too late, the act has already been done. The `enemy within` has struck again. But as long as we keep battling on, the enemy has not won! Remember the words of the hymn, `Fight the good fight with all your might`, because it is only when we give up the fight and let sin take over and rule in our lives and we start to `go with the flow` of this world, it is only then that we have given up and lost. This act of `going with the flow` of this world can be identified with the words that are to be found in the book of Isaiah, let`s read Isaiah 57: 6. `Among the smooth stones of the stream is your portion, they are your lot. . .` We can understand the analogy of these words, they refer to the stones (people) as having been worn smooth by no longer resisting the flow of the stream (of the world) but instead have allowed themselves to be worn smooth so that they no longer offer any resistance to the evil ways of this world. Okay, so we are all sinners in the sight of the Lord God, we know this, but we true Christians should have one thing in our favour, we should all be repentant sinners, and make no mistake, the Lord God considers there to be a huge difference between a repentant sinner and an unrepentant one! At this point, let me put forward an extreme possibility, supposing, that in a person`s past, their particular `enemy within` triumphed over them and they committed the sin of murder, but this happened 20 or 30 years ago and that person has changed greatly for the better in the ensuing years, is it possible for that person to become one of the Christian bretheren, genuinely called by the Lord God to perform their share of the work that is part of the Lord`s great plan? Well let`s read some scriptures and then you can decide for yourselves. First we`ll read Acts 10: 10-15. `Peter became very hungry, and would have eaten, but while the others made ready, he fell into a trance. And he saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel coming down to him, and it looked like a great sheet that had been knit at the four corners and let down to the earth. Inside were all manner of four footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And he heard a voice saying to him, Arise Peter, kill and eat. But Peter said, Not so Lord, for I have never eaten any thing that is uncommon or unclean. And the voice spoke to him again the second time, That which the Lord God has cleansed, do not call common.` And now we`ll read from the book of 1 Corinthians 6: 9-11. `Don`t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither fornicators nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, (practicing homosexuals) nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And of such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the spirit of our God.` (because they have repented) Let`s read Titus 3: 3. `For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.` We`ll let the apostle Paul have the last scripture for this particular section, 1 Timothy 1: 12-16. `And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has enabled me, (for He counted me as being faithful, having put me into the ministry) I, who was before a blasphemer and a persecutor and violent, but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly, in unbelief. And the grace of our God was exceedingly abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. However for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might show forth all long suffering, as an example to them who should afterwards believe on Him to life everlasting.` Knowing these things, perhaps we should be the more respectful to those amongst the bretheren whose past sins (if they are known to us) have been more grievous than we could have imagined. They have obviously battled long and hard with their particular `enemy within` and probably continue to do so. Their past battles with sin will in all probability, have been longer and mightier than many of our own. Let`s have a read of Luke 7: 37-48. `And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner, and when she knew that Jesus sat down to eat in the Pharisee`s house, brought with her an alabaster box of ointment. And stood at His feet behind Him, weeping, and began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed His feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee whose house it was and had invited Jesus saw that which she did, he thought to himself, This Man, if He were a prophet would know who and what manner of woman this is that touches Him; for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said to him, Simon I have something to say to you. And he says, Master, say on. Jesus says, There was a certain creditor who had two people owing him money, one owed him 500 pence and the other owed him 50. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell Me therefore, which of the two will love him the most? Simon answered and said, I suppose the one to whom he forgave the most. And Jesus said to him, You have judged correctly. And He turned to the woman and said to Simon, See this woman? I entered into your house but you gave Me no water with which to wash My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time that I came in. You did not annoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with perfume. Wherefore I say to you, Her sins which are many are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little. And He said to her, Your sins are forgiven.` Now this does not mean that we should all go out and start committing as many sins as possible just so that we can be forgiven of them, remember, the more sins that we commit, the harder it is to stop committing them, and we must stop committing them in order to be forgiven of them! Let`s go back to the early life of the apostle Paul or rather Saul, as he was known then, and by so doing we can learn from the scriptures just what exactly he was capable of by allowing his `enemy within` to control him, and we can wonder at the constant battle that he must have had for the rest of his life in keeping that `enemy within` under constant submission to his better spiritual self. Acts 7: 59-60. and Acts 8: 1-3. `And they stoned Stephen to death, who called upon God and said, Lord Jesus receive my spirit. And he kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he died. And Saul was in agreeance with his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except for the apostles. And devout men carried the body of Stephen to his burial and made great lamentation over him. As for Saul, he began ravaging the church, entering into every house and arresting men and women, and committing them to prison.` And Acts 9: 1-2. `And Saul, still breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, and desired from him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, to the effect that if he found any confessing Jesus Christ, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.` Yes the apostle Paul, in his earlier life, actually assaulted Christians and had many tied up and dragged off to Jerusalem to be `enquired of ` by the Pharisees, and I wonder how many of those unfortunate people were beaten and then put to death. Though our own sins that we recognize may be many and grievous for us to acknowledge, we must never give up trying to conquer them and our `enemy within` that so often drives us to commit them, because if we do then sin will have beaten us. And think about this, sin will also have beaten us if we begin to think less of ourselves (because of the guilt of our sins) than the Lord God actually thinks of us, and yet we must not be careless and go to the other extreme and begin to think too highly of ourselves, because self-righteousness is also a sin, as poor old Job, found out to his cost. We need to achieve a balance, let`s have a read of Romans 5: 19-21. and Romans 6: 1-2. `For as by one man`s disobedience (Adam) many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One (Jesus Christ) shall many be made righteous. Moreover, the law exists so that the offences may be seen to abound. But were sin abounded, grace did much more abound. That as sin has reigned to death, even so might grace reign through righteousness to eternal life by way of Jesus Christ our Lord. What shall we make of this then? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may abound? God forbid, how can we who are dead to sin live any longer in it? We should be able to understand that it is the constant war that we wage against sin and our `enemy within` that provides us with balance so that guilt does not drag us down below that which we are in the eyes of our Lord God, and self-righteousness does not elevate us above it. Even though the apostle Paul received personal instruction and teaching from Jesus Christ, Paul`s fleshly, human nature was never taken away from him or changed to make life easier for him, it was never `healed` by Jesus even though the two of them had `face to face` contact as it were. So should we try to reconcile this fact? I mean if you know a person that well and have spoken to them as a friend and you (especially if you are God) know them inside and out, some personality traits you might find irritating but on the whole you can trust this person as well as, or much better than any other, and you also had it within your power to make that person exactly as you would like them to be, perfect in your eyes, would you? Well I will continue in the presumption that the majority of people would answer, `yes`. So why didn`t Jesus change Paul, Peter or any of the other apostles and make them perfect in His sight? You know, Jesus Christ, as the Creator of all things, did actually create a being who was perfect, so let`s remind ourselves about what happened to this being, we`ll have a read of Ezekiel 28: 14-15. `You are the anointed cherub that covers, and I have set you so; you were upon the holy mountain of God, you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until iniquity was found in you.` This scripture is of course referring to Lucifer, later to be renamed Satan, by the Lord God. None of us can know another person as the Lord God knows them, I would suppose that Jesus knew that if He healed Paul of his personality `disorders` and his `enemy within`, then by altering his personality, even for the better, the work that was required of him would never get done, and that Paul`s character would never develop beyond that which already existed. We can assume that it is the same with each of us, we must continue our battle against evil and our `enemy within`, and with the Lord`s good help and guidance we will endure to the end. Paul did ask Jesus for intervention in his life but what was Jesus` reply? well let`s read 2 Corinthians 12: 7-9. `And less I (Paul) should be exalted above measure because of the abundance of the revelations made to me, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to torment me, less I should be exalted above measure. Because of this torment I asked the Lord three times that it might be taken from me. And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you: for My power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weakness so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.` We all have our own particular failings and weaknesses and our own `enemy within` to constantly battle against, (Winston Churchill, the British wartime P.M., called his `enemy within`, `Black Dog`) and there are times when the realisation of our failings can make us feel wretched, worthless and depressed, but we must always bring to mind that we true, baptized Christians have been given the possession of a God-given spirit that prompts us and allows us to repent and to be forgiven through personal prayer and thus to start afresh. It is this repentance through prayer that sustains us and enables us to continue with the work (no matter how insignificant it may seem to us) that the Lord God knows that we are capable of doing and only we are capable of doing. For we, as unique individuals, each have our own way of communicating the `work` to others and so it should be, because the world is made up of billions of likewise unique individuals and the chances are that we, (practicing Christians) if we are diverse in nature, but having a common bond and a common work, will eventually `make a hit` on some of the `lost` people of this world. As we continue our battles with our `enemy within`, it will enable us to empathise more closely with our fellow men although many will be hostile towards us because of our faith, but we must bear in mind that the geat majority of them are weak and what they do to us and what they think of the Lord God`s true church, is for the most part done in unbelief because of ignorance. Think on this point, if the screaming rabble that had called out for the crucifiction of Jesus Christ had truly known and understood who He really was, would they have done to Him what they did? of course not, they would never have even dared to try to! The majority of the world`s `christian` clergy are failing the deceived millions who follow them, thus allowing the `enemy within` to control each of them without any of them understanding the true recognition of the penalty for personal unrepentant of sin. We true Christians know that there is no priest, there is no man, who can forgive another man of their sins, whether directly or by being an intermediary via the `confessional box`. Let`s be thankful therefore that in Jesus Christ we have a priest eternal. Let`s read Hebrews 12: 22-25. `By so much was Jesus made a guarantee of a better agreement. There have been many priests but they were not permitted to continue their priesthood because they eventually died. But this Man, (Jesus) because He lives and continues for eternity, has an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore He is able to save them to the uttermost who come to God by way of Him, because He lives for ever to make intercession for them`. Let`s read of how the apostle Paul speaks of his `enemy within` and of how he deals with it in the book of Romans 7: 22-25. `For I delight in the law of God after the inward man. But I am aware of another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with my mind I serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.` We can, with the Lord`s help, keep under submission our `enemy within` and patiently wait for the time when the Lord Jesus Christ will conquer it for us once and for all. 1 John 5: 4-5. `For whatsoever is born of God, overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. Who is he that overcomes the world? he that believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.`
And so to sum up. The `enemy within` is the part of our fleshly `make up` that urges us to open the door to our mind and let in the evil influences that continually knock upon it. Our spiritual responsibility is to keep that door shut, and when on occasion it is opened, we must shut it once more and then proceed to get rid of whatever evil has been allowed to enter.
